About Dr. Hugh Caterson
Hugh Caterson is a Sydney-based rheumatologist and clinical immunologist. He sees patients for the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of rheumatological, immunological and allergic disease. He has specialist expertise in autoinflammatory diseases, also known as periodic fever syndromes.
Hugh’s approach to patient care is centred on patient education, shared decision making, and multidisciplinary input with allied health professionals.
He completed his medical training at the University of Sydney where he also obtained a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in medicine. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in the dual specialties of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology and Allergy. He has undertaken specialist training in the field of autoinflammatory diseases at the Royal Free Hospital in London, UK.
Hugh sees rheumatology and immunology appointments at BJC Health Parramatta and rheumatology, immunology and allergy appointments at BJC Health Bondi Junction (medication/drug allergy assessment is not offered for logistical reasons). He works as a staff specialist rheumatologist at Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick where he leads the Fever and Autoinflammatory disease Clinic.


Autoinflammatory diseases
Autoinflammatory diseases, also called periodic fever syndromes, are a group of rare conditions where the body’s immune system spontaneously creates inflammation even though infection is not present. Some autoinflammatory diseases have underlying genetic causes. Symptoms include recurrent and unexplained fever, inflammation and pain which can affect the skin, joints, abdomen, chest and eyes.
